The purpose of the Union High History Project was to research, document and preserve the history of Union High School in Caroline County, Virginia. Information was gathered from a variety of sources including libraries, historical archives, newspapers and books. Various methods were used to locate people affiliated with the school including articles in the county’s two newspapers (Free Lance Star and Caroline Progress), radio announcements, letters to the African American churches in the county, the Caroline Sunday School Union, the Union High Reunion Committee and libraries in Caroline County and the nearby areas.
Union High alumni, faculty, family and friends (Union High History Project Participants) were interviewed and their memories documented. They also shared their school memorabilia such as yearbooks, photographs and other school documents.
The output of the project is a book titled Memories of Union High: An Oasis in Caroline County, Virginia, 1903-1969.
