Henry Waugh and Susan Woolfolk

Susan Woolfolk Waugh circa 1908
Susan Woolfolk Waugh circa 1908
Henry Waugh and Susan Woolfolk were married on August 19, 1886 in Caroline County, VA.  Susan was the daughter of William and Louisa Woolfolk of Caroline County, VA.  Henry was the son of Abraham "Abe" and Jane Waugh from Orange County, VA. His full name may have been William Henry Waugh. The Waugh family is sometimes documented as Ward. The informant on William Woolfolk's death registration is listed as Harry Ward, son-in-law (I believe this person is Henry Waugh).

In 1900, Henry and Susan were living in Port Royal, Caroline County VA next to Louisa Woolfolk and several of her children. In 1905, the family moved to the Abington Township of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania where Henry worked as a Laborer in the Coal Yard.  Henry continued to work into his 70's.  In his later years he worked for the Sanitation Department.

Susan died on December 3, 1918 in Glendale, PA of Pulmonary Tuberculosis during the flu epidemic. She was buried on December 6, 1918 in the family cemetery in Caroline County, VA. In 1942, her body was disinterred and reburied at Mount Lawn Cemetery in Bowling Green, VA, when the government purchased the land in the area to build A.P. Hill.

Henry Waugh died in 1954 in Abington, Pennsylvania. Henry and Susan had four children: Lizzie/Eva/Elizabeth, Rose, William Henry Waugh Jr. and Lucy Ann.

Lizzie/Eva/Elizabeth Waugh (07/04/1887 – 10/21/1918)

Lizzie Waugh (aka Eva Waugh/Eva Ward) was born on July 4, 1887 in Caroline County, VA. There appear to be several names for Lizzie Waugh: The Caroline County Virginia Birth Records for 1881-1896 list an Eva Ward born on July 4, 1887 to Harry and Susan. Also, an entry in the family Bible indicates Eva Waugh was born on July 4, 1887 and died October 21, 1918. The Pennsylvania Death Certificate for Elizabeth Nelson indicates her parents were William H. Waugh and Susan Woodfork of Virginia. I believe Lizzie Waugh, Eva Waugh, Eva Ward and Elizabeth Nelson are all the same person. Lizzie married Carl Nelson. The date and place is not known at this time. Carl Nelson was referred to as “Q” Nelson.

Lizzie Waugh died on October 21, 1918 in Glendale, PA of Influenza during the flu epidemic. She was buried on December 6, 1918 in the family cemetery in Caroline County, VA. In 1942, her body was disinterred and reburied at Mount Lawn Cemetery in Bowling Green, VA, when the government purchased the land in the area to build A.P. Hill.
