Lucy Jane Woolfolk and Captain Ellis

Lucy Jane Woolfolk and Captain Ellis were married on January 23, 1896 in Caroline County, VA. Captain was born circa 1874 in Caroline County, VA.  He was the son of Wormley and Nancy Ellis and the brother of Josephine Ellis, the wife of Lucy Jane's brother William "Willie" Woolfolk. Captain was his first name, not a title. Lucy Jane Woolfolk was the daughter of William and Louisa Woolfolk.

Lucy Jane and Captain had two sons: Robert born July 1899 and Silas born August 9, 1902. Except for an entry in the 1900 Port Royal Caroline County, VA census where Lucy Jane, Captain and Robert are living in Louisa Woodfork's household, I have not been able to locate any information on Robert Ellis.  During the course of my research, I noticed that Silas was always living with a member of the Woolfolk or Turner family. In 1910, he lived with his Aunt, Willie A. Turner, and her son Augustus (age 12) in Port Royal Caroline County, VA. In 1920, he lived with his Cousin, Anthony Turner, Anthony?s wife Emma and son Samuel (age 15).

It appears Lucy Jane may have been ill for awhile.   In a letter to her sister, Susan Woolfolk Waugh, dated November 11, 1906,  Lucy writes that she is not feeling well. She also suggests she may not live to see Christmas and tells Susan of some items she would like her to have to remember her by once she has passed. An entry in the family Bible indicates Lucy Jane died June 5,1907.  Since death records were not kept during that time in Caroline County, VA the cause of her death is not know.

Captain Ellis worked as a teamster in a saw mill in Caroline County, VA.  At some point, he moved to Spotsylvania County, VA.  In 1930, he is listed as a servant in the James Thornton household in Courtland Spotsylvania County, VA.  His occupation is listed as a Laborer who performs odd jobs.

Captain Ellis died at the age of 52 on April 14, 1932 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, VA from a loss of blood as the result of a saw mill accident. His funeral was held on April 17, 1932 at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Caroline County, VA. Captain Ellis's death notice indicates he had one son Silas, so it appears that Robert Ellis passed way before 1932.

Silas Ellis and Catherine Brown

Silas Ellis married Catherine Brown of Woodford, VA in Washington, DC on February 7, 1923. Catherine was the daughter of Burley and Mamie Brown of Caroline County, VA.  Silas and Catherine had one son, Hailey.  I believe Silas and Catherine later divorced.

Silas eventually returned to Caroline County, VA.  He is listed in the 1930 Port Royal Caroline County,VA census as a lodger in Victoria Fry's household.  Silas worked for the Sylvania Industrial Corporation in
Fredericksburg, VA in the late 1930’s. He attended Bethlehem Baptist Church
and served on the Board of Trustees.

He married a widow, Victoria Frye, of Caroline County, VA on June 8, 1935 in Caroline County, VA. Victoria was the daughter of Douglas Jackson and Martha Carter.  She was the widow of Thomas A. Frye. Silas worked for the Sylvania Industrial Corporation in Fredericksburg, VA.

Silas and Victoria moved to
Washington DC circa 1943. While living in Washington, DC Silas worked as a Trucker with the PA RR and a laborer for Sweet and Hall Co. Silas died on Sunday, November 19, 1967 at the Cafritz Hospital in Washington DC and was buried at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
