Beverly Shakespeare

Beverly Shakespeare was the son of Sanker/Sancho and Lucinda Shakespeare.  He married Susan Sale of Caroline County, VA on July 25, 1869 in Caroline County, VA. Susan was the daughter of Humphrey and Piney Sale of Caroline County, VA. They may have had a son named Jesse. I have not found any additional information about Susan or Jesse.

In 1872 thirty Black members of Bethany Baptist Church in Spotsylvania County, VA asked for and were granted letters to leave the church and establish their own church, Beulah Baptist Church.  Beverly Shakespeare was one of those members.

Beverly Shakespeare may have had two additional sons: Richard and John Henry Shakespeare. Information for these two individuals indicate their father is Beverly Shakespeare, Since they have different mothers, I am not sure if their father is the same person and the son of Sanker/Sancho & Lucinda Shakespeare.  The 1910 and 1920 census show Richard’s sons living in John H Shakespeare’s household. They are listed as his nephew.

Beverly Shakespeare died in Caroline County, VA on July 27, 1876 from Consumption.

Richard Shakespeare
 (04/1866 or 05/13/1867 – 7/8/1927)

Richard Shakespeare was born 4/1866 or 5/3/1867 in Caroline County, VA.  His parents were Beverly Shakespeare and Adaline Harris. He married Ann Taylor on December 13, 1888 at Shiloh Church in Fredericksburg, VA. Ann was the daughter of Maria Taylor.  I am not sure what happened to Ann after they married.

Richard Shakespeare married  Molley M Shakespeare circa 1894.  I am not sure if they were married in Virginia or Maryland. In the 1900 Baltimore ,MD census, Richard and Molley are living on York Road with their three children:
  • Mary (born 6/1895)
  • Richard D. Jr (born 10/1896 or 10/11/1895)
  • James E. (born May  1899)
I have not been able to locate any additional information on Molley or Mary.  The 1910 Baltimore, MD census shows Richard, a widower, is living on York Road in Baltimore, MD. Fanny Hayes (housekeeper) is the only other member of the household.

Richard Shakepsere Sr. died on
July 8, 1927 in Baltimore, MD from a Cerebral Hemorrhage caused by Arteriosclerosis.   Fanny Shakespeare is listed as the wife on his death certificate, so Richard and Fanny may have married.

James & Richard Shakespeare moved to Caroline County, VA between 1990 & 1910 and lived with the Uncle and Aunt John Henry & Sarah Ann (Sally) Shakespeare.  Richard worked for RL Long Potomac in Potamac, VA.

James worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation in
Steelton, PA.  The 1930 Baltimore, MD census shows James living as a Roomer in the household of Percy & Mattie Leecato on Argyle Avenue in Baltimore and working for the Gas and Electric Company.

I have not located any additional information for Richard Jr or James Shakespeare.

John Henry Shakespeare (1877 or 1876 or 03/14/1875 - 12/16/1969)

John Henry Shakespeare (aka Henry Shakespeare) was the son of Beverly Shakespeare and Francis Lewis.  It is not clear what year he was born. A note on his World War I draft registration card indicates he was not sure of his age, only the month and day of his birth.
His widowed mother, Frances Shakespeare, married Peter Bucker on March 16, 1878 in Caroline County, VA. Peter was the son of Horace Buckner and Rachel Morris.  John Henry Shakespeare lived in the household of Peter and Frances Buckner.

John Henry Shakespeare married Sarah (Sallie) V. Fergerson in Caroline County, VA on February 8, 1899.  Sallie was the daughter of Daniel and Lucy Fergerson of Caroline County, VA. Their son, John Herbert Shakespeare (aka Hebert Shakespeare), was born in February or July 14, 1909 in Caroline County VA.

The family moved to Baltimore, MD in the 1920’s where John Henry worked for the railroad.  He died on November 16, 1929 as was buried in Woodford, VA.

John Herbert Shakespeare worked for Bearings Service Company in Baltimore, MD.  He married Ethel Amos circa 1929. Ethel was the daughter of Robert and Ethel Amos. They had one daughter: Shirley Jean Shakespeare.

John Herbert Shakespeare died
October 10, 1978 in Baltimore, MD.  He was buried in the Zion Grove Church cemetery in Woodford, VA.
