AP Hill - Graves

After the government purchased the land to create AP Hill, the graves were exhumed and reinturned at other cemeteries.  In most cases, Black (colored) graves were moved to Mount Lawn Cemetery and White graves were moved to Greenlawn Cemetery. (In some instances graves were moved to a site requested by the family.)

L. R. "Jack" Davis, the funeral director of Davis Funeral Home (which later became Storke Funeral Home) in Bowling Green, VA
, was responsible for moving the graves and kept very detail records.  Mr. Davis'  daughter, Kathy Burchell, is very  aware of the historical importance of this document and has made it available to many libraries and historical archives.  She is also willing to talk to anyone who would like to learn more about the gravesite moves. She may be contacted by email.

I have a copy of his document which identifies the name of the person buried in each cemetery and the new grave site location.  (Source: Fort A.P. Hill).  A copy of the document is also available at Storke Funeral Home in Bowling Green, VA.  The phone number is (804) 633-5661.

The document is over 250+ pages; therefore, I am unable to scan the entire document and upload it to my website. I have scanned the index and the pages for all the church cemeteries and placed them online. Follow the instructions below to determine if the person of interest is located in the document and view his/her information.

1) View the index to determine if the person of interest is located in the document.
      a)  Some names have two pages numbers (ie. 38,232).  The first page number is the page
listing where the grave was originally located.  The second page number is the page
listing where the grave was moved.
       b)  Other names have only one page number.  This indicates a cemetery was located on property
          belonging to this individual.
